What is Worship Like at The Journey?
The Sunday Worship Gathering is the central event in the life of the Body of Christ! It is where all of the Church comes together to truly be the church: a family, transformed by the truth, goodness, and beauty of the Christian Story. We want our Sunday Worship Gatherings to represent our four core values: Biblical, Thoughtful, Relational and Missional. We hope you experience those values in every aspect of our church, but here are some key ways you might experience them:
We Gather as a Family
At The Journey, we believe that the Worship Gathering of the Body of Christ is the central event for our entire church, for Christians young and old alike. Rather than having a separate gathering for kids, we joyfully include our children in our worship service. Whether our children are maturing disciples of Jesus or still curious about what it means to follow Him, children witnessing their parents worshiping and serving in church surrounded by the family of God, from every stage of life, is a fantastic way for them to discover the truth, goodness, and beauty of the Christian Story. Every service we remind our church that the presence of our children is a blessing, and that the noises they make are reminders of that blessing. For those with very little ones, we have a nursing mothers room, and a play mat for those who need to let wiggles out.
We Are Equipped Through Expository Preaching
At The Journey, we believe that the Christian Story is the true, good, and beautiful story of the entire world! There is nothing more important than learning and living in light of the story that God has written about Himself, His creation, and His people. We learn this story from the Bible. Therefore, every Sunday we open up the Bible together, to mine the depths of that Story, chapter by chapter, verse by verse, feasting on the self-revelation of our Creator through His Word.
We Sing Music Worth Singing
Music is the most powerful teacher of the church. Yes, even more than sermons! At The Journey we love to sing those songs that exemplify what is true and good from Scripture and that are objectively beautiful. We also believe that worship is a corporate work. When we gather as a church, we are not gathering to have a private personal experience with God. The Church gathers as the Body of Christ, to declare corporately the praises of our God. We engage our minds, with the lights on, declaring with joy to each other the truth in the lyrics of our songs. As with many works of theology, we believe that the truth, goodness, and beauty of a song is often tested with time. So, we sing hymns that have stood the test of that time, and we sing contemporary music that we believe will likewise stand the test of time.
We Are Active Participants in Worship
Every church, regardless of tradition, has a specific pattern or order to their corporate worship. It may be more or less structured. It may be more or less formal. But everyone has a set pattern or order of their worship. The traditional word used to refer to these patterns and order is liturgy. Traditionally, liturgy means “the work of the people”. This communicates that corporate worship involves every member of the church. When you worship with us you will be an active participant, not just a spectator, as we stand and sing, kneel and confess, greet each other and pray, not individually but together as one Body, the Body of Christ. Liturgy, as most habits do, form us and transform the way we live. Therefore, we want to be thoughtful about our liturgy. At The Journey, our liturgy teaches us the Christian Story.
We Are a Relational Community
We want to be known as a church that journeys alongside each other as a relational community. You will experience this relational community during our refreshment time before the service, during our service, or after service when many of us go to eat dinner together. We hope that by the time you leave on Sunday you’ve connected with many people in our church, including our pastors. We also would love to Connect with you before the service! Please feel free to fill out a Connect and Prayer Card to let us know you’re coming and one of our Pastors will personally reach out to you, or if you have any questions ask one of our Welcome Team members (wearing a Welcome Badge) in the lobby on Sunday! We hope to see you soon!
